Pokljuka countdown, 3 days to go
It's only three days and the BMW IBU Biathlon World Cup at Pokljuka is eager to start. The venue is set and ready to greet the world’s best biathletes. “There is enough snow on all parts of the tracks. Only a few minor corrections have to be done. Nevertheless, Pokljuka is ready to receive the athletes. I am really glad that the organizers managed to prepare the venue so well. I can only say it’s really beautiful,” Mr Borut Nunar, IBU Race Director World Cup, described the conditions after track and venue inspections.
Mr Borut Fačnik, Vice-president of the Pokljuka Organizing Committee expressed deep gratitude to all the workers who have done an excellent job in preparing the venue and creating the winter fairy tale: “We are really looking forward to the competition. Not only that we tried to invite as many as visitors and fans as possible, but also the highest members of the IBU are coming to Rudno polje. This proves that Pokljuka is placed in the heart of the biathlon world what makes us very proud. This is also very important due to the fact that the Executive Committee of the Ski Association of Slovenia (SAS) confirmed Pokljuka’s candidacy for the 2023 IBU Biathlon World Championships. We intend to take the advantage of hosting this year’s world cup event to establish new contacts as well as renew the old ones. The arrival of some of the highest ranked members of national biathlon associations confirms our firm bidding intentions. During the world cup competitions we intend to meet also the representatives of Slovenian Ministry of Economic Development and Technology, Slovenian Tourist Organization, as well as the representatives of Bled, Gorje, and Bohinj Municipalities. Last but not least we hope that the attendance of some of the highest members of Slovenian social and political society will strengthen our bid. I am strongly convinced that organization of all competitions will be at top-level thus creating the sensational atmosphere for arriving visitors and fans.”
“We have started preparations for the upcoming World Cup immediately after the end of the last year’s event by storing the snow. Since September around six to ten maintenance workers were constantly here at Pokljuka. A fortnight ago the temperatures finally dropped enough to allow us to start producing the artificial snow. A week ago we started preparing the tracks which were ready on Saturday. The temperature tonight as well as in the past nights was -10 °C. This meant that we could use each minute of every night to prepare the arena. The merit that the competition could start today goes to all those working day and night at the tracks and arena,” Mr Matej Kordež, Chief of Competition, explained the venue preparations and weather conditions.
“We expect a lot of fans. On Friday more than 2200 children is to be among the visitors. Namely, as in the past years  Zavarovalnica Triglav, Slovenian insurance-financial group, together with Pokljuka Organizing Committee is enabling children from different social backgrounds to attend the event. Free-of-charge bus transportation to Pokljuka will be organized as well. On Friday the starting point of the busses will be in Bled, while on Saturday and Sunday they will depart from Lip Bled factory in Rečica,” added Mr Tomaž Šušteršič, Secretary General of the Pokljuka Organizing Committee.
Thus, Pokljuka is ready. First biathletes have already had the chance to test the courses. As of tomorrow they will be able to train at the shooting range as well. Official trainings are scheduled for Thursday, both Sprint competitions on Friday, Pursuits on Saturday, and Relays on Sunday.
